2015 Southwest Aquarium Keeper Event (SAKE)
« on: April 25, 2014, 02:09:27 PM »
The 17th annual Southwest Aquarium Keeper Event (or SAKE) is scheduled for Saturday, March 21, 2015.  Note the name change from Southwest Area Killifish Event.  We will have several programs, a giant raffle, and both a silent and a regular auction.  There is no admission fee and everyone is welcome.  We do encourage you to donate fish and aquatic plants for the auctions to help us defray our expenses.  Although technically a "killifish event," all types of fishes suitable for smaller aquaria can be donated to the auctions.  To be successful, we rely upon both your contributions of aquarium fishes, aquatic plants, and live foods, and your participation in the raffle and auctions.

LOCATION:  SAKE will be held at the same location as last year:

    La Quinta Inns & Suites
2510 W Greenway Rd  (NE corner of I-17 at Greenway)
    Phoenix, AZ 85023

NOTE: For anyone planning to spend the night, our use of the meeting rooms at La Quinta is NOT dependent upon any room reservations.  La Quinta
expects to be fully booked due to Cactus League Spring Training so feel free to shop for the best rate among the nearby hotels and motels. For some
alternatives, check the list below the map - http://forum.azrivulinkeepers.org/index.php?topic=3.0.

REGISTER NOW:  There is no registration fee to attend SAKE.  You can register at the door; however, we encourage you to "register" before the event.  There may be some incentives offered at the event for those who register early. To register early, on or after January 11, 2015, please send an e-mail to azkillie@yahoo.com.  The e-mail to register must include:

    1.   Your name
    2.    Any current aquarium club affiliation(s)
    3.    Current hometown (and state)

If you are registering a spouse, children, or a friend, please include the same information for each attendee.  When your registration has been processed, you will see your name listed on the ARK website. To be eligible for possible incentives, early registration requests must be sent before 6 p.m. Arizona time on Tuesday, March 17, 2015.  You can scroll down this page to find a list of registered attendees.

BRINGING AUCTION ITEMS:  If you are bringing items for the auctions, it would greatly help if you fill out an auction form BEFORE you arrive.  Bring the form with you and turn it in when you check in at SAKE.  These are located at http://www.aka.org/ark/sake.pdf.  If you are unable to print the pdf, you can write your items on a piece of paper and provide the same information.  Almost anything "fish-related" is welcome as a donation.  If you want to sell items through the auction, there will be limits as to what you can enter and how much.  Please contact Allan Semeit at azkillie@yahoo.com for approval of sale items PRIOR to SAKE.

SHIPPING AUCTION ITEMS FOR SAKE:  If you would like to send fish for the auction, please e-mail Allan Semeit at azkillie@yahoo.com for the shipping address.

MARK MARCH 21, 2015, ON YOUR CALENDAR.

Bob Goemans is a retired Environmental Contracting Manager for a subsidiary of General Motors. He has been in the aquarium hobby for over fifty years and was the first in the USA to own and use an undergravel filter. He has also been writing for various marine aquarium magazines for the past 30 years and has authored nine books, and has one of the most popular marine aquarist websites in the world - Saltcorner.com. In addition to his writing endeavors, Bob has an aquarium and environmental consulting business, and is also a Sierra Club member.

Dan Pape became interested in keeping aquarium fish when he saw a friend’s aquarium in high school and had to try it.  He moved to Tucson, AZ, from New York to attend college (many years ago) and became involved in the local aquarium society.  There he acquired some killifish and was fascinated by their beauty and unique characteristics; and Dan has kept killies ever since.  Dan still lives in Tucson and maintains several killifish species as well as other freshwater fish.  He also keeps busy with his other interests which include model rocketry, including an 8-foot tall night flying rocket, and coaching soccer to young kids.  This began when he learned to coach his daughter when she was younger.

Dr. Ron Harlan can trace his interest in tropical fish to his childhood in Rangoon, Burma.  He helped a family friend, U Cho, drag a seine through streams and collect tropical fish.  He joined the American Killifish Association in 1965 and was a member of the BAKA during his high school years when he lived in a bedroom with 35 species of killies and dwarf cichlids.  More recently he had been the resident Rivulus expert in the Southern California Killi Club and keeps a slightly more modest number of species.  Professionally, Ron was a biology faculty member, department chairman, and Dean of Instruction at Glendale College for 33 years. Now retired, he is the owner of Back to Nature Filtration founded in 1985 and still provides affordable reverse osmosis to the tropical fish and orchid hobbyist. Ron has taken 6 trips into the Peruvian Amazon as well as collecting in Mexico, Costa Rica, Venezuela, and Bolivia.

Stacy Fenhaus is a lifelong fish and aquatic plant enthusiast.  She is an elected Member-at-Large on the Executive Board of the International Betta Congress, the current President of the Arizona Betta H.E.A.D.s (IBC Chapter) and the 2013 Reserve Grand Champion for betta exhibitors in Area 1 (North America).  Stacy keeps both wild species and domestic species of Betta, but her main interests are in the small bubblenesting wilds, large mouthbrooders and the metallic strains of domestic betta (all fin types).  She is known in the betta community for her shining gold colored bettas, as well as keeping many kinds of live foods and providing plant packages for betta breeders.  In addition to bettas, Stacy keeps many other types of fish, from microfish like Danio margaritatus to monster catfish like Leiarius marmoratus.  Fish keeping runs in her family, her great-uncle Charles Ash bred the first marble (which he called "broken bar") Angelfish.  Stacy is a former military contractor but now enjoys her days as a mother and wife near the Mexico border-- when she isn't scrubbing betta jars or pruning aquatic plants that is.

Scott Jacobson is an avid aquarist and fish collector. He has traveled to collect tropical and temperate fish in the Amazon River and its tributaries 5 different times (the most recent in 2014) as well as to Uruguay once. Since the age of 5, Scott has kept a variety of fish aquariums, primarily freshwater. Currently, Scott Jacobson is keeping a variety of fish including killifish, South American cichlids, livebearers, and many others. Additionally, Scott is the North American Native Fish Association representative for Arizona. When not collecting or maintaining his fish, Scott Jacobson is a middle school principal and lives in Cottonwood, AZ with his wife and son.
