2014 Southwest Area Killifish Event (SAKE)
« on: March 23, 2013, 06:22:28 AM »
The 16th annual Southwest Area Killifish Event (or SAKE) is scheduled for Saturday, March 8, 2014.  We will have several programs (see below), a giant raffle, and both a silent and a regular auction.  There is no admission fee and everyone is welcome.  We do encourage you to donate fish and aquatic plants for the auctions to help us defray our expenses.  Although technically a "killifish event," all types of fishes suitable for aquaria can be donated to the auctions.  To be successful, we rely upon both your contributions of aquarium fishes, aquatic plants, and live foods, and your participation in the raffle and auctions.

LOCATION:  SAKE will be held at the same location as last year:

    La Quinta Inns & Suites
2510 W Greenway Rd  (NE corner of I-17 at Greenway)
    Phoenix, AZ 85023

For room reservations (2 double beds) at La Quinta for Saturday night, call 1-866-527-1498.

PROGRAMS:  We will have four programs.  See the Schedule below for the presenters and the titles.  The presenter biographies are listed at the bottom of this page.

REGISTER NOW:  There is no registration fee to attend SAKE.  You can register at the door; however, we encourage you to "register" before the event.  There may be some incentives offered at the event for those who register early. To register early, on or after January 5, 2014, please send an e-mail to azkillie@yahoo.comThe e-mail to register must include:

    1.   Your name
    2.    Any current aquarium club affiliation(s)
    3.    Current hometown (and state)

If you are registering a spouse, children, or a friend, please include the same information for each attendee.  When your registration has been processed, you will see your name listed on the ARK website. To be eligible for possible incentives, early registration requests must be sent before 6 p.m. Arizona time on Thursday, March 6, 2014.  You can scroll down this page to find a list of registered attendees.

EVENT SPONSORS:  We encourage you to buy products from the companies who are donating to SAKE.  For the list of companies from whom we have received raffle items, go to http://forum.azrivulinkeepers.org/index.php?topic=187.0.  Be sure to check for their SAKE special offerings and discounts.

Ken McKeighen, a noted artist, has informed us that he is donating 9X12 watercolor pupfish pages that he is doing just for the 2014 Southwest Area Killifish Event (SAKE). The Arizona Rivulin Keepers wishes to thank him for his generosity!

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES:

Scott MacDonald has been in the Poison Dart Frog hobby for about 20 years. He started the New England Frog Group and later the Southwest Frog Group. While in the past he has kept upwards of 40 vivariums, he and his wife Tracy now keep a more modest number of vivariums. This goes a long ways towards helping Scott keep his sanity. Scott is also a member of the Desert Aquarist Society and now has four freshwater planted aquariums.

John Simpson had to withdraw from speaking on aquatic plants.

Casey Leonard graciously agreed to speak about aquatic plants and aquascaping.  Casey has been employed by Aquatouch, a Phoenix aquarium store, for three years.

Dr. Ron Harlan can trace his interest in tropical fish to his childhood in Rangoon, Burma.  He helped a family friend, U Cho, drag a seine through streams and collect tropical fish.  He joined the American Killifish Association in 1965 and was a member of the BAKA during his high school years when he lived in a bedroom with 35 species of killies and dwarf cichlids.  More recently he had been the resident Rivulus expert in the Southern California Killi Club and keeps a slightly more modest number of species.  Professionally, Ron was a biology faculty member, department chairman, and Dean of Instruction at Glendale College for 33 years. Now retired, he is the owner of Back to Nature Filtration founded in 1985 and still provides affordable reverse osmosis to the tropical fish and orchid hobbyist. Ron has taken 6 trips into the Peruvian Amazon as well as collecting in Mexico, Costa Rica, Venezuela and Bolivia.

Art Leuterman from Houston, TX has been involved in the fish hobby since his first wooden aquarium (pre-school) and with killies since the 1960s.  He currently maintains 80+ aquaria breeding killies, Ancistrus, Rift Lake Cichlids and dwarf cichlids while growing out discus for others to successfully breed (since they refuse to breed in his tanks).  He has served the American Killifish Association (AKA) on the Board Of Trustees two terms and as Chairman.  Currently he heads the Judging Committee of the AKA.
